Die Manufacturing
Time
Quick and easy- often
in minutes.
Requires extensive
pre-planning and must be job specific. Installation requires
close attention to detail.
Clean Up
Quick and easy- in
minutes.
Requires extra time
due to adhesive makeup.
Running Speed
Comparable to Cold
Foiling.
Comparable to UniFlex®.
Capital Expenditures
Requires a hot stamp
station and a magnetic cylinder for mounting the UniFlex®
Die. Is compatible with any hot stamping rotary press.
Requires designating
a station for applying the adhesive and one for the foil.
Must be equipped with UV cure capability.
Foil
Can utilize any standard
hot stamping foil formulated for rotary hot stamping- available
in many shades. Standard rotary foil is "less" expensive
than foil formulated for cold foil stamping.
Requires a special
foil formulated for cold foiling and rotary. This foil also
prices "higher" than standard rotary foil. Foil
for cold foiling is only available in limited shades.
Foil Indexing
Can be utilized with
UniFlex® and can further reduce foil costs by maximizing
foil usage.
Can not be utilized
with Cold Foiling thus a higher foil waste factor.
Adhesives
Not required.
Required and is job
specific so formulation must be preplanned. Adhesives add
expense and extra clean-up. Adhesive takes up 1 print station
(unit).
Foil Stamping Quality
Crisp, clean and sharp
edges. Can stamp both fine detail and large area detail. Foil
maintains brilliance of foil so it retains its true inherent
characteristics.
Can stamp large areas
but has difficulty in stamping fine detail and maintaining
crisp edges- edges are usually soft and not clean. Does not
maintain the brilliance of the foil on 90% of jobs- the foil
gets dulled in the cold foiling process and the finished results
can look similar to a metallic ink instead of a foil. The
foil takes on the texture characteristics of the stock causing
it to dull.
Substrate
Can stamp on a variety
of substrates paper and plastic substrates.
Is limited to stamping
on smooth coated stocks or plastic substrates.
Reuse
The UniFlex® die
can be reused and easily stored. Additional foil would need
to be purchased.
The plate used for
Cold Foiling can be reused but added expense is associated
with additional adhesive and specially formulated foil.
Cost
The UniFlex® die
becomes a "fixed" cost- as the die is priced per
square inch regardless of detail. The UniFlex® process
is extremely cost effective.
Cold Foiling can be
expensive and its high expense is related to the adhesive
and special foil required- this would also be considered a
"variable" expense.
Job Performance
UniFlex® will
stamp as clean and crisp as traditional solid cylinder foil
stamping without the cost of a customized solid cylinder.
Stamping is very user friendly with UniFlex®.
Cold Foiling can be
ran on almost any press as it does not require a hot stamp
station. Cold foiling does require a lot of pre-planning and
added expense for specially formulated adhesives and foil.
Cold foiling also has a significant foil waste factor because
it can not be indexed. The press must be equipped with a UV
curing capability.
